From Towels to Pillows Tutorial

Hey everyone!  I hope you have recovered from all of the 4th of July festivities.  I wanted to show you a quick little tutorial on how to make kitchen towels into pillows.  This is a super easy way to add a little something different to your decor for minimal cost.

We have these super cute Bait and Tackle Kitchen Towels.  They come packaged in this little envelope.  You get 4 to a set.  Don't you love the vintage look of these?  To me, they are too cute to be folded up and just hung over the handle on the fridge, they were begging to be made into something else...
 Let's get started!!!

Supplies
1 pack of Bait and Tackle Kitchen Towels
1 1/2 yards of Countdown to Christmas--Frost Rudolph
3 yards of Pellon Fusible Fleece
2 bags of Polyester FiberFill

Cut your backing fabric and fusible batting so it is 1 inch larger than your towel.  I have noticed the towels aren't all the exact same measurement.  So you will just have to measure each to get the exact measurement.  I wound up cutting my 19" x 26". You will need 4 pieces of the backing fabric and 8 pieces of the fleece.

Fuse your fleece to the back side of the towel and your backing fabric.  Take your time and make sure you get a good bond.

Quilt the towel however you like.  I chose to go very simple with my quilting.  Just outlining certain parts of the design that I wanted to stand out.

A close up of the quilting that I did.

Pin the towel and backing fabric together with right sides facing each other.  Leave a 6" opening at the bottom to allow you to stuff the pillow.  I always like to pin my openings with different color pins because I have a tendency to think about other things while I am sewing and forget what I am doing :o)

**See that cutie pie of a pin cushion? You can find it here.

Sew the 2 pieces together.  I used a 1/8" seam.  When you have sewn them together, trim your excess fabric and cut your corners at an angle.

Turn your pillow right side out.

Here it is turned right side out.  You will want to press your seams.

I love how pretty and clean this is coming out.

How you finish this up is completely up to you.  I wanted an "edge" on my pillow so I pinned around the red square on both sides.  Then sewed along the inside and outside of the square.  **Remember to keep your opening for stuffing.  You can see where I have pinned my starting and ending points.

A close up of how I stitched around the edge of the red square.

Start stuffing your pillow.  At this point, I stopped what I was doing and went and checked out our complete line of Kitchen Towels.  I called Karen and told her that I wanted one of each set.  I have visions of having a set for each holiday and any special occasion.

Sorry, I was sidetracked there...I started by stuffing my corners first then filling in the middle.  As your pillow becomes fuller, make sure you aren't getting lumps.  You just have to work with the stuffing and smooth as you go.

Fully stuffed!  How stinking cute is that?

Now you want to stitch closed your opening.  I started by pinning on either side of the red line then stitching it together. I am sorry I didn't get a pic of that step, but you can see my stitching here.  Now, pin the bottom part of the open and stitch it closed.  I just used my machine and did a top stitch very close to the edge.

Here it is ready to be loved and enjoyed!

On a side note.  If you are looking for a craft that your husband will like this is it.  My manly man husband is not into my sewing at all.  When I was taking pictures, he came out and looked at what I had made.  He grabbed up one and said, "OK, these are really neat."  In my world, that is like winning a Grammy.  Hehe,  I hope you all have a GREAT day!

Learn to Sew Kit

It is almost 4 a.m.  I am up.  My family is asleep.  I am typing away on my computer.  They are having dreams of going to the lake.  My coffee pot is brewing.  Their noses are snoring.  Now, why on earth would I be up so early?  I have so much work to do and I can't get anything done during the day.  So, on to another approach...wake up early and get it all done.

My daughter is 3.  She keeps coming to me and asking if she can sew with me...
*isn't that the sweetest?*

I have decided that it is time to really start showing her how to sew.  I gave her these cards a few months ago.

She has loved them and they are pretty much worn out.  So now on to big girl sewing...
This kit is super cute!  I love the fabrics in it and I am so excited about showing my little one how to start sewing. We featured these kits this past weekend in the SHOP.  Head on over and grab one or two.  Trust me...these are sooo worth it!  Remember, you can use my DISCOUNT CODE and use the money you save to stay cool this summer and buy snow cones to celebrate after you have made all the cute stuff in this kit.

4th of July is around the corner! TUTORIAL

How is your summer going?  Our's seems to be getting busier and busier.  I had a little time this morning to whip up these little cuties and I wanted to show you how to make them.
We now have Baker's Twine in the shop.  I love this stuff. There are so many things you can do with it.  These beautiful spools have been staring at me for about a week begging me to get my hands on them.  I couldn't resist making my little one these cute flip flops and headband to wear on the 4th.

Let's get started!

Supplies
Red Baker's Twine
Flip Flops--I bought these at Walmart for $3.00
Headband--this one came in a pack of 6 for $2.85
E6000 glue
Various beads--I don't have mine pictured because I decided to change my design about halfway through.
To begin with, unroll a large amount from your spool.  Then roll it back up and bind with a rubberband.  Trust me, it will eliminate a lot of frustration in the long run.  You can just pull the end out a little at a time.
Place a large dot of glue at the base of the flip flop.  You might let it set up a minute so it holds while you are wrapping.
Now wrap, wrap, wrap.  Apply E6000 on both sides of the part you are wrapping. One thing i noticed...the twine will unwind as you are wrapping.  I started twisting it a little tighter right before I wrapped it.  This seemed to help.
Here it is finished.  When you come to the end...apply a large dot of the E600 to secure the end of your twine.
Repeat the process for the other flip flop and the headband.
Now...apply a large dot of glue and start to apply your beads.  I just sprinkled mine on and let them fall where they wanted to...the glue stays wet long enough that you can kind of play with it and get the desired effect you want.  Also, I thought one layer of beads wasn't enough so I let the first layer dry, then added another dot of glue and applied more beads.
For the headband, I applied a large dot of glue then dipped it in the beads.  Again, you can move the glue around to get the look you want.
The glue dries rather quickly and I love the results!

I hope you all have a wonderful 4th!

Want a prettier Kitchen?

I am the WORST when it comes to buying new pretties for my kitchen.  I would show you a picture of some of my "retro" aka really old towels, but honestly I am too embarrassed.  Time to fix that, and what a great time to do it.  We are featuring some of our adorable kitchen items this weekend...
Dairy Fresh Milk Canisters in Black or Red.

Now, you have to do something for me.  Head over to Angela Yosten's Blog. She is an amazing person.  She is constantly coming up with new patterns and designs.

Here is her tutorial on how to make this really cute set.

Head over to Home a la mode and check out our other super cute Family Recipe Items.  Speaking of family recipes, I wanted to show you a pic of some wonderful pretzels my little one and I made the other day.

They were sooooo yummy!  If you are interested, let me know and I will add the recipe later and how to make them.  Everyone, have a FANTASTIC day today.  I am off to sew a very special project...hint hint...I am super excited about this.
